BRIDGES GED/Life Skills Program

The GED/Life Skills program provides experiential learning for people 17 and older who have faced challenges in their high school careers with intensive GED training, life skills courses, career development and parenting workshops. Twelve-week GED and pre-GED courses are offered at a cost of $50 per student. The fee is refundable for students who participate fully in the program and graduate within 12 weeks.

Life skills courses focus on self-esteem, conflict resolution, decision making and goal-setting. Career development training focuses on resume writing, interviewing skills and office decorum. Students are recruited through word-of-mouth and by referrals from our community partners, including the Memphis City School system. The program currently serves 80 students per 12-week period.

Students are required to take an entrance exam and must be able to fully commit to one of the following classes:

  • Monday and Wednesday morning (8 a.m. to Noon)

  • Monday and Wednesday afternoon (1 p.m. to 5 p.m.)

  • Tuesday and Thursday morning (8 a.m. to Noon)

  • Tuesday and Thursday afternoon (1 p.m. to 5 p.m.)

  • One Friday a month for Life Skills (8 a.m. to Noon)

Admission is based on the results of the Test of Basic Adult Education (TABE). This four hour test is given monthly. Students with scores in the sixth to eighth-grade range are assigned to a pre-GED class and students with scores of 8.1 and above are assigned to a GED class.

One of our mottos is: “In order to get something different, you have to do something different.” Here in the GED/Life Skills Program we are here to help our students do just that!
