Developing your Career Plans

Local community resources can help Families First participants find out about job openings, job requirements, and job benefits. The local Tennessee Career Center provides numerous resources for job seekers. Visiting the Career Center is a good way to find out about the resources available there and get important information about jobs.

Research the local labor market for occupations that are in demand. You will need to find out the education and work experience requirements for applying for the demand jobs. After you’ve completed your research, you can begin to write out your career plan. A few of the questions you should consider when writing your plan are:

  • What are the entry level positions related to my career choice?
  • What companies are currently hiring for those positions?
  • Do I know anyone in this career that I can interview to get a more realistic description of the job?
  • What community colleges or universities offer the training I need to qualify for this type of position?

Career Centers offer the following types of services that may be useful to Families First participants:

  • Statistical information on jobs
  • Information on jobs that are in demand
  • Local job vacancies
  • Print and on-line resources and information
  • Computers with Internet access (Please note that participants need to know how to use the computer.  Career Centers do not offer computer skills training).
