Bridge Builders®

Founded by community leader Rebecca Webb Wilson in 1988, the Bridge Builders program brought together 40 students from two schools - Briarcrest and Northside - in its first year.  Today, the program serves roughly 1,500 high school students each year from more than 50 public, private and parochial schools across the Greater Memphis area and is being replicated in Montgomery, Alabama.

The mission of Bridge Builders is to develop among high school students a group of future leaders who can lay aside individual, social, economic and cultural differences and work for the benefit of all. Participants build the skills necessary to improve their self-confidence, strengthen their relationships, succeed in school and take action to build a healthy community - all while concentrating on three focus points - diversity appreciation, community action, and leadership.

Partners for youth

Bridge Builders® has partnered with the Jefferson Awards-Deloitte Youth Service Initiative (YSI) to begin implementing the YSI program in Memphis City Schools. Through the partnership, the Jefferson Awards has targeted 6 Memphis City Schools to become founding members for the new region.

The Jefferson Awards for Public Service was founded in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Senator Robert Taft, Jr. and Sam Beard to honor public and community service. The mission of the Jefferson Awards is to encourage and honor individuals for their achievements and contributions through public and community service.

The Jefferson Awards Youth Service Initiative was created in partnership with Deloitte with the aggressive goal of passing the tradition of volunteerism along to our youth and helping double volunteerism in America’s high schools.
